Talk summary

The internet is built on “rough consensus and running code” – the idea that practical, working systems that can be quickly implemented are a better starting point than waiting for the perfect design.

In this talk, we explore how this idea shows up in how we talk about digital sustainability – from the Sustainable Web Design model, to path the Software Carbon Intensity spec has taken to become a global ISO standard.

We’ll also cover the role that consensus plays in defining what firms need to disclose about sustainability in 2025 as new laws come into play, and the Green Web Foundations’ new project, carbon.txt to make this new information easily discoverable and usable by as many people as possible.
